Convention Thoughts

Though I wouldn’t want to overstate this – in my watching of the two national conventions – yes, I watched all of each so far – a fundamental difference between the two parties is the philosophical starting point. The Democratic Party (or the Left) begins at a position of disbelief. Or perhaps skepticism – and I’m not saying this is by definition wrong – principled skepticism is quite necessary to democracy. Republicans begin at a position of belief – and this can certainly be wrong or over-emphasized as well – but it does allow for a much more positive message to be put forth. And one that religious people are going to understand – because we begin from a position of belief as well.
