More on Anti-Semitism at Columbia U.
NY Daily News editorial gets it right.
Massad did not return calls, and Saliba declined to comment. Both are members of Columbia's Department of Middle Eastern and Asian Languages and Cultures, which has been the locus of sentiments of these kind for years. Complaints were widespread enough that University President Lee Bollinger asked a committee on free speech earlier this year to look into academic bullying on campus. Somehow, it was unable to turn up claims of bias or intimidation.
Well, now they're staring Bollinger right in the face. Yesterday, he responded as any upstanding, right-thinking academic would: He promised to investigate and to institute a process for students to air grievances. How enlightened of him! How little! How late!
and had this from the 28th:
George Saliba, a professor of Islamic civilization, outside his classroom. "You have no claim to the land of Israel. You have no voice in this debate," [the Jewish student] said Saliba told her. "You have green eyes. You're not a Semite. I have brown eyes. I'm a Semite."
Joseph Massad, a tenure-track professor of modern Arab politics, who allegedly said Palestinians are the "new Jews," Jews are the "new Nazis" and Israel is a "racist state" with no right to exist as a Jewish state. Massad, who did not return calls, is described as repeatedly refusing to answer a question from Tomy Schoenfeld, an Israeli student and military veteran. Instead, he demands of his student, "How many Palestinians have you killed?"
This is the tip of the iceberg, believe me. Massad is deplorable.
The problem is that Columbia U. continues to act as if these guys are actual academics. But their "scholarship" is entirely dependent on their politics. And take note that it's only the conservative-centrist press that are covering the story. NY Times doesn't give a half acre of horse manure. Why? Because all of these anti-Israel guys routinely bash Bush. The Times doesn't want to attack its own 'expert sources'. "Paper of record" my eye.
It is the NY Sun, The Post, and the Daily News that have carried the story. The Times couldn't leave its anti-Bush message for anything.
